Welcome to WSonic87's Comic Review sector! Here, you'll hear all
his criticism, praise, and scrutiny of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog
comics! If you want to comment on his reviews, please go to the
Comics section of Mobius Comics, and start an official Comic (comic
number HERE) post. Now, there are some spoilers, so please read the
comics before reading the reviews. Now let's see what WSonic87, our
famous critic, has to say!
*NEW* Sonic Comic #176
"Cracking the Empire"
Knuckles keeping a cool head? Tails angered at Sonic? Amy Crying? Amazing how the destruction of one's
long time home can affect a group. A comic of classic Sonic. Dynamic motion in the characters and
time-limited action is required. With this comic, the world of Sonic has been completely rebuilt now.
Very little is left as it once was. This comic once again proves that indomitable spirit of Sonic and
the Freedom Fighters. Aside from spoilers not much else can be said. An amazing and classic style rescue
of everyone and rebuild of a home! All on the dge of complete destruction. Eggman may be stronger now but
so are the Free Mobians.
*NEW* Sonic Comic #177
"Home, new, Home"
Home under siege and what does the monarchy decide? "Everyone, go move back in. We'll let the automated
defenses protect us for now." Fortunately the non-monarchy works on an action plan meanwhile. Hey, everyone
makes mistakes I guess. Once again, a classic Sonic-style battle sequence exists. Witty banter, familiar
faces fighting together. Eggman getting whipped and sent running home once again. Add to that the retro
references (i.e. hairstyle, cheering ending, references to being a video game, Eggman in a massive robotic
suit) and you have classic Sonic once again. Like I said before, it seems to be a complete remaking of
Sonic. It's as if they decided to start things over. Stress has taken its toll, however. Ideas could
be spreading and problems could be set to arise. There is evil in the city (Mammoth looked rather serious)
and two fronts of evil outside (once again).
*NEW* Sonic Comic #178
"House of Cards"
Sonic vs Tails? The last time we really saw something like that was back in the return to "Horizontal and
Vertical dimension." So will bonds of friendship be enough to work through and re-establish problems here?
I was worried the reason would be the classic "They're my parents I've never met in my life before and so
I'll follow them blindly" storyline. Fortunately, it's much better than that. Political and moral reasons
are beginning to split the land. A amateur king who is only able to stand up for himself in the shadows
wishes to undo what he has accepted. The previous king still holds heavy influence yet his mind seems to
not be functioning fully (Alzheimer's or perhaps a mixture of stress, crystallization, and paralyzation?).
The standard third party between Sonic and Tails has just left. Now it is up to them to figure things out.
Personally it's strange the way this was set up. It would require very key phrases and things to be said.
The near exact wording used. The last time Sonic would've said what he did was way back before comic 25.
The relationship between him and tails since 50 and above has changed to a true brotherhood. That being said
it's strange that Sonic would say what he did. It's obvious that no matter the outcome, Tails will escape as
Sonic would not allow any lasting harm to come to him.
It appears that now yet another thing is going to change. While I'm confident Sonic will realize what is going
on and things between him and Tails (as well as the rest of his friends) will be re-fortified once more; I believe
the government system is soon to change. Probably aiming along the same lines as the Senate from Star Wars.
Sonic Comic #121
#121 Main Story: Sonic and Sally followed Geof. St. John and
Hershey to a place called Feral forest where they finally found
Prince Elias. The story was rather good (especially because they are
clearing some things up) it would have been nicer to see a fight
scene with some of Sonic's wisecracks but that's okay. The art
looked kind of rushed in this comic but it was still passable.
Knux story: It wasn't all that interesting. References like,
"Soon you shall be one with the Force," kinda made it a joke. The
funeral scene did fill in some information however. Personally the
art in this part was more like the art of the first 25 Sonic comics.
Side Story: It was okay, they moved Mina to singing and revealed
a bit more about Sonic's care for others. But I detected a note of
jealousy in Sally's voice in her last statement.
Sonic Comic #121
#122 Sonic Story: Sonic playing the guitar was pretty cool, I
guess Mina singing addd to it. It's really nice to know that they
are finally going to resolve this "love triangle" between Sonic,
Sally, Mina. The fact that they actually had a combat scene (however
small) with at least one wisecrack was good. The touch on how strong
the guards that were brought to "question" the weasel was pretty
funny as well. The artwork on this one was least of all rushed, it
was extremely detailed and made things look better.
Knux Story: This wasn't really informative, if you had read
Nux ish. 25 you would already know all that Aurora said. Plus the
idea of using chaos as heralds? Personally I think that was pretty
lame, others may think otherwise though. The art in this one was
just a bit more cartoonish than the last one.
Side Story: I don't delve as much into these (Vector's head
phones are cool though) but this one was rather interesting, and had
a lot to say about Knckles and Vector. It was extremely well
written, alhtough the art department made them look a litt more
"human" than usual.
Sonic Comic #123
Sonic Main Story: This was a rather interesting comic, they
fixed the "love triangle" problem, although those who read the
comics monthly would have realized that Sally was the only choice
anyway. No major fight scene in this one (oh well they can't all be
perfect) but there was some action with Mina in this one). The art
was extremely detailed in this comic, but it was so detailed I found
it a little distasteful because of how "human" it looked, I mean
there are little kids reading these things, you don't want to set
their minds on stuff at that early an age do you. Aside from that it
was a pretty good comic.
Knux Story: This was basically like the last one, just
rehashing what Knuckles has already been through (although they did
the same thing with Sonic several issues back). it was closer to my
personal type of favorite art. A tad more detailed, but still
containing the same cartoon type that they started with.
Side Story: Well this one was interesting, I didn't see this
coming at all. "The Last Robian" was pretty interesting, although I
think that Sonic's dad wasn't reversed because he was so badly
injured before he was roboticized and that's why they didn't
de-roboticize him. The art in this one, matched up pretty close
(although a bit more hurried) to the same art that they had in the
first 50 Sonic comics.
Sonic Comic #124
Sonic: Well they had said they would bring Shadow back, but I
figured that he would have slipped into a paralell dimension (did
any one else notice the flash at the end of SA2 when Shadow
'died'?). Well he's back ( the aliens that rescued him are the same
ones that turned Robotnik and Snively back to normal. Well who
didn't see what Sally and Sonic were going to do? I saw it but I
wasn't expecting it to come up this early. What a surprise! It's
interesting that the Xorda found the city of Megaopolis, but you've
never heard of it before. Also the fact that they could find it, but
the freedom fighters (coupled with Station Square) couldn't find it.
Well this sets the stage for the next comic book. The art was pretty
different form the last comic book, a little less human but still
too much so for my taste. I wish that they would pick one style and
keep that (I hate all this changing around where I have to keep
getting used to a new style).
Knuckles: Well they finished the chronologing of Knuckles'
life, and they moved him through some portal (but if oyu look at
whta Aurora and Athair said at the end, it looks like he's going ot
be doing something so that he can return to Mobius. The art for this
one was pretty much the same as in the last one. At least they've
picked one artist to do the Knuckles section for a while, although
they may change again.
Sonic #125 (Sonic Adventure 2.5 Omega) 10th Anniversary Issue
Well this was the second part of SA 2.5, and it was the 10th
anniversary issue! It was such an exciting comic, one of the best
I've read in a while. My hat is off to the writer's of this one, it
was great.
Comic Story (Sonic only, there wasn't any other story) The entire
story line was great, it had a real interesting ending with a heart
zinger thrown into boot (not the first time we've seen a statue of
Sonic, or his friends mourning for his death). Instead of having two
different stories they combined all of their stories to make this
giant one. I don't know why but this was the longest one I've read
in a while (not page wise but story wise). I'd like to say something
about the art that was in this one, but for each chapter they used a
different artist (so they had the overly-human, cartoon-human, and
close to original sonic arts). There was a letter form Yuji Naka in
this comic, that talked a bit about how Sonic was created and what's
going on now (interesting reading if you get the comic). On a small
note, (nothing against the comic book providers) I noticed that at
the end, the funeral scene pages appeared to be reversed (because it
goes form his death to a statue and Sally, then when you flip the
page it shows ground zero again and the funeral scene).
*SPOILER*
Basically Robotnik was going to use Sonic to power one of his
giant engines of destruction (He already used his speed to power a
robot before, but in an alternate universe) against the Xorda (Sally
tried talking to them first but it didn't work). After they sent the
Xorda ship packing Robotnik tried to trapped Sonic in his machine to
fuel it. But the Xorda didn't entirely leave, they left a device
that spun like a dial and, when finished, would create a black hole
that would swallow the world. Sonic (along with Sally in Dr. R's
bot) went to destroy it, while everyone else that you've ever seen
in all of the comics (except the Forty Fathoms Freedom Fighters)
headed there to take out this new danger. Station Square's missiles
didn't work and when Sonic arrived, the bot fell to pieces right
next to the device. (Interesting side note that Tails saved Fiona
from a laser blast) Knuckles returned in the nick of time to save
them all from the laser cannons and an energy wace, but he had lost
everything (even his ability to fly). Sonic had a heartfelt parting
from Sally, the ran full speed towards the device to turn it
backwards, causing it to implode. Supposedly Sonic died (i.e. there
was a big funeral scene, and a statue, and questions about what the
FF's would be feeling) but can Sonic really be dead? Tune in next
month to find out.
Sonic Comic #126
Sonic Story Well compared to the last one this one wasn't as
good, it did have a good story idea behind it though. The main thing
that I did not like about this story was the giant hole that was
thrown in. In one part of the comic Sonic says "Back home the power
of SIX green chaos emeralds turns me into Super Sonic" This is
completely incorrect, everywhere else he has required seven emeralds
to transform. The art in this one was good, very highly detailed and
they took their time drawing it. I believe the story of an evil
version of Super Sonic would be extremely interesting, I just wish
that they had had Sonic actually fight him and not just have Super
Sonic fizzle out.
Side Story Ok the only real reason this was here was to allow
the writers to have some mode of fun, and so they didn't have to
come up with any new real story about the people on Mobius. The art
matched that of Off-Panel (duh) and the writing was a little bit
corny, I certainly hope that the writers enjoyed themselves with
this enough that they will not do it again for some
time.
Sonic Comic #127
Main Story:
Okay I think we can sum this one up in one word, plagiarism. This was pretty much right out of Star Trek Voyager. I've seen the episode before, I even have it somewhere. (And no I'm not a trekkie). Anyway, while the art wasn't exactly to my liking it got the point across, so at least that works and they are getting him home.
Side Story:
Ok, copied, copied, copied. This came straight out of a mad magazine (i.e. White spy vs Black spy). They even had the mad (what would you call him?) mascot, in it. But it was good art (for a mad magazine white spy vs black spy).
Sonic Comic #128
Main (and only) story:
Okay, is anyone else getting tired of "Tossed in Space?" Well, this came close to being another Star Trek episode. (for those of you who've seen it and know what I'm talking about) The Motion Picture, and the Nomad episode from the original series. But they also could have changed the story a bit (I'm a starwars fan (sorta) you'd think they could put just one space dogfight in. We do know now what happened to E.V.E. after she left, so that's good. They changed art styles again in this one, and it's hard to criticize that (or praise) it.
Sonic Comic #129
Side story (came first):
Did anyone else see 'Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racing scene' written all over that. Even the number Sonic said his ship was in came out of Star Wars (i.e 1138 was the number of the cell block that Luke said they were transferring a prisoner from). Aside from that it was pretty good.
Main Story:
Boy was this interesting. It filled in a lot of questions, maybe even answered why Sonic's dad was the only one who wasn't debotted (council got him Ceneca-9009 before he could fix that). Pretty good story line for a history filler. Having Tails' parents thrown into the mix added to it as well. The ending was different from what I expected but well worth it. An excellent comic in my opinion. The art was rather good, more of the style that I like.
Sonic Comic #130
Main Story:
Well this comic is post space saga, and now the hero is home. Very good story, a tad different but still good. Great action to start out with, and a bunch of interesting twists. The ‘year later’ thing makes me wonder if the energy from the shots being fired at Sonic’s ship disrupted the portal he went through, either speeding up time or sending him to a different reality. Also there Robotnik appears to have made a new design of swatbots, and a controller that looks like something out of a terminator movie or something. There are a lot of clues pointing to a different reality. A lack of Shadow, Antoine’s scar, the clothing styles. But we shall wait and see. The art was very highly detailed in this one, especially in the swatbot department. Very good comic, on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one.
Sonic Comic #131
Main Story:
Seems like it took forever to get this one. Real interesting story, finally get to see power rings again, and apparently Fiona Fox is gonna become a regular for a bit. Story line looks like it’s shaping up to be good. Apparently the time frame is different, or there have been two Xorda attacks, because General D’coolette has apparently been guarding the irradiated Robotropolis for ten years (he says so himself). So we are looking at least ten years, maybe more. On a side note, I think that ‘cmdr. Brass’ looks a lot like Wolverine from X-men don’t you? The art in this was as highly detailed, though with more shadows compared to the last one.
Side Story:
Well, here’s where it starts; Mobius, 25 years later. Strangely the tale starts from Knuckles’ viewpoint, I would have figured it started in the kingdom of Acorn. Here we see most of the main characters (our favorites) all grown up. A rather interesting story, with a few twists of it’s own. Fans of the Sonic Underground series will recognize the names of, apparently, Sonic’s two children; Sonia, and Manik (even though they spell Manik differently from in the cartoon series). All in all this sounds like it shall be a rather interesting series of side stories. The art in this was descriptive in itself. Nearly good enough to have explained some things (except those of which we’ve never heard about) without any text.
Sonic Comic #132
Main Story:
Well, it was an interesting one. It went by rather quickly but I guess it sets itself up for the last part 4 of "Home." Gotta couple things going on in this one. Sonic fighting M (set up for major hero comeback next issue I hope), Tails matching wits against Robotnik’s AI computer, Amy having some sort of ‘connection’ with something that increases her power (another show that this might be an alternate reality). Aside from that and Shadow mysteriously showing up, not much happened in this comic aside from setup. Art was a little lacking in this one, in some places Sonic looked as tall as Robotnik, and the angles showed really crazy proportions (even for a Sonic comic).
Side story:
Not much happened here, just showing up at the ‘unveiling.’ We have found out that apparently Knuckles now has a younger brother, hopefully we’ll get more on that later. The interesting part came when Rotor was talking to Cobar. That conversation alone created some interesting ideas. Still waiting for Sonic and the rest to show up, hopefully that will be soon. The drawing for this comic was more detailed, and definitely more ‘human’ like than the main story. While the detail is appreciated, I know some prefer a less ‘human’ feel to the characters.
Sonic Comic #133
Main Story:
Well now we see that final part of Sonic’s return home. This one was really close in content to the last issue that came out. An apparent ‘ending’ (perhaps) to Dr. R’s ‘Mecha." This story gave a slight closure (although still leaving questions as to wether or not this is Sonic’s reality, or if he’s time traveled really far). For the nuke incident. Personally (other opinions may differ), I agreed with this comic’s view of Shadow. If you look real close at the point where Knuckles yelled ‘charge,’ you could see not just Shadowbots, but Combots, E-100 series droids, the big round robots (like are on the Sonic Anime). While in the surrounding areas, and backgrounds the detail of the art was highly creditable, in some places it wasn’t exactly good to have (I mean kids read this book), and while not as bad as some it was unnecessary.
Side Story:
Not much going on in this part of M25YL. Just a simple diagnosis of what could be a problem, and a quick view into the life of Knuckles’ nephew. If you look close on the page where Lord Rotor tells Knuckles to look at the sky, you will also notice that they failed to give him his bionic eye! The art style of this one is pretty much the same as that of the main story, and I hold the same opinion for it. Sonic Comic #134
Main Story:
Well, for starters I’d just like to ask if anyone truly enjoyed this comic. If they wanted to show how Knothole had changed they could have done it another way. Ok, a few things about the story itself: (1 what’s with having Muttski talk? I mean why would that be really important. (2 What’s with the whole Sonic/Sally thing? There’s no point to it and it never bugged Sally before. (3 They did give some important information about why Sonic’s dad wasn’t de-botted. Personally I still think that Sonic is in another dimension, primarily because of the stuff around him, and also because of what General D’coolette said in the first part of ‘Home’ where he mentioned having guarded Robotropolis for ten years. Instead of criticizing the art I’m just going to say that, there was none, if anyone can tell me the name of the style that they drew this comic in, please e-mail me at: WSonic87@hotmail.com
Side Story:
Well, not much really happened here, we do see that apparently Sojourner is faring better than Sabre. Apparently he has had an accident or something. Not much was said, just watching out and a side note that Sonic and Knuckles had a sort of ‘falling out’ over the years. It’s interesting that they still haven’t shown King Sonic yet.
Sonic Comic #135
Main story:
All right, a bit more action this time around than last time. During the ‘battle’ part we even got some of the ‘non-chalante’ attitude Sonic normally has. Most of the Sonic part of the main story was just strict fighting, with almost no information revealed. The most intriguing part f the story came through Robo’s point of view. Well just have to wait on this one and see how things turn out. On another note, in my opinion while the art wasn’t the best, it was a lot better than last ish. In some places Sonic’s face was a bit ‘chaotic’ but other than that it was pretty good art. I do wish that they would put some color back into the robots like they used to. Now all the roboticized people are just silver.
Side Story:
Well, now we know what happened to Dimitri, sort of, for him to be turned into just a floating head. And the fact that Lien-da and Julie-Su keep in touch is rather interesting. Aside from that nothing happened. Personally I am still waiting for Sonic and Tails to show up in this look at a possible future.
Sonic Comic #136
Main Story:
All right, looks like we’re getting back into some good ones. Although there really wasn’t a point to the story itself, it was fun to read and showed that, even when he’s tired, Sonic is just as quick in his head as he is on his feat. The idea of Tails taking Finals was placed pretty well, wouldn’t you say? Sonic’s solution to the main problem in this story was ingenious, though I did see a minor hole in it. If it healed Sonic’s dad, how come it didn’t turn him back into a Mobian? We’ll find out eventually. The art in this one was definitely good. It works and, although I think they should adjust Sonic’s spines, it’s great.
M25YL:
Well, not much new here. Just more set up stuff. It does appear though that Sally, Julie-Su, and Lien-da keep in touch regularly. On that note, we have now seen Sally, and a Picture of Sonic, although Sonic hasn’t made his Grand Debut. From that picture though, it appears that Sonic is one of the few who hasn’t changed in appearance.
Knux Side Story:
This was undoubtedly the best story in the whole comic. I like the idea of obedience to authority. Unfortunately, I don’t’ always follow that idea and I get in trouble a lot, hehe. This last one was just well put together, and had a good idea behind it. The art on the Shadow bots was awsm, although the rest of the art was the same as in the Main story.
Sonic Comic #137
Note: Apparently they used a new style on the cover. I think it looks good myself, like unto the drawn pictures of Sonic and Tails done for the video games.
Main Story:
Awesome story to say the least, this is why the comic is cool: Action! Great storyline, great idea. All in all a very enjoyable comic. Also, Antoine finally got to slice Sonic’s head off lol (don’t believe me? Read the comic). Rather well detailed art, the picture of the FF-Mark 2 on page 13 (the one with the explosion) was extremely good. Aside from a slight too-human touch, the art was good.
M25YL:
Real good set up for next part. We finally got to see Sonic! As expected, he hasn’t changed much unlike most everyone else. According to the comic, Sonic is 41 in this time-frame, doesn’t look like he changed much does it? The only thing different about him is the crown. We even got to see Sonic’s two kids. As I said, not much going on, but good set up for next ish. A few alliterations to past events that, hopefully, we’ll learn more about next issue. All in all a good comic, art was pretty close to that of the main story (maybe because they were done by the same guy?).
Side "Story":
Ok, maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t exactly call this a story. Why do they bother writing about things that happen in real life (sorta anyway, hehe). I mean, this is a kids comic book, a fiction story for fun, who needs realism? Ok, the art was sorta, lame. Not as lame as we’ve seen before (i.e. Sonic # 134), but still bad. I can’t draw even that good, but if that was all I could do, I’d still say I couldn’t draw.
Sonic Comic #138
Main Story:
Well, this comic is setting up for an interesting story. I’d really wish that they’d hurry up and give Knux his abilities back, but oh well. Yes, we have the return of Chuck’s Chili dogs! I was hoping they’d do something like that. Aside from the ‘worshipers’ things appear to be shaping up normally for an action packed Sonic Saga! I still think that Sonic isn’t exactly in his proper dimension, I could be wrong but that’s just my opinion, we shall see. But again with that sub-ok art. Again, if anyone believes that this is a good style, please send me a message.
M25YL:
Well this threw a few curves into the mix. While I should’ve seen what they decided to do about Tails, the biggest curve is what is up with Sonic. Things just don’t seem right at the moment, something else is definitely going on. His attitudes appear to have changed, drastically, and he’s apparently got something extremely bugging him. If Sonic won’t travel or talk to even Tails, things are pretty bad. Amazingly tho, outwardly at least, Sonic hasn’t changed that much compared to everyone else. We’ll just need to see how much he’s changed in other ways. The story is really shaping up to be exciting, and packed with Sonic-Style Action.
Sonic Comic #139
Main Story:
Well, this story is startin to throw some interesting turns into the mix. Turning the Dark Legion into leaders of a ‘Rebel Alliance’ against Robotnik is an interesting idea. Looks like they got the Hidden Palace Zone straight out of that great Genesis game, Sonic3 & Knuckles (or just Sonic & Knuckles whichever you happen to like better, hehe). Right down to the pedestals around the master emerald and the prophetic tapestry in the ante-chamber of the emerald room. Anyway, as I was saying, this one was full of surprises and set up for next month’s.
M25YL:
Not much here, just set-up and behind the scenes look at life 25 years later. Apparently something is seriously bothering Knuckles, maybe we’ll find out next ish. Amazing how a war can change what a personality, you’d never have caught Sonic doing what Manik was up to in this comic. Anyway, hope they throw in some action next ish.
Sonic Comic #140
Main Story:
Some good action in this one, a couple ‘censored’ lines they could’ve done without but oh well. This story is definitely shaping up. Hopefully, as they reach the end, the excitement will get even better as will the action. Plot is good so far, lots of twists. I think they’re underplaying Knuckles’ inner traits, (as he’s a lot stronger than people think, even without his powers). It has been a bit but finally we have comedy in the action. Sarcasm during the fight instead of before and after. We’ll just sit tight and wait for next month’s comic.
Side Story:
Ooh, lots of twists and turns on this one. Lots of set-up indeed, but as one person said, let’s hope they get to the main point quick. Some quick background, plus a look that tho he may still look the same, Sonic may have changed the most out of everyone. Not much else to say, other than that the resolution should come soon.
Sonic Comic #141
Main Story:
All right, action. Good finish for this 4 parter. I’m glad they fixed several people, including making Remington back into a strong, fighting character. As for Knuckles, rehab doesn’t come without a bit of pain now does it? I’m just glad he’s completely back now. As always, I love the "hidden" references made, like the ones to S3&K in this comic. Looks like we’ve got action packed comics up ahead for us, let’s hope it just stays that way for a while.
Side Story:
Well, I assume by now that we definitely do know that Sonic is not quite himself in this future. As for the reasons for Mobius’ current state, those are clear as well. (Tho they made a mistake in that the pic they used for their reference to "The Good, The Bad, and The Hedgehog" is actually from "Night of 1000 Sonics"). Let’s just hope everyone’s ready for some action (as always).
Hopefully see you guys next month for another awsm comic.
Sonic Comic #142
Main Story:
Ok, this story was ok, considering it deviated for no apparent reason from what was going on in the Sonic world and it slightly re-wrote some Sonic history. Fortunately, it didn't change anything dramatically. As a couple people have pointed out, the names of the "Original Freedom Fighters" are rather corny. Unless you call brief flashes of ‘past' missions action, there wasn't any in this story, unfortunately. The art for the ‘current' version of Sonic and Co. was not the best, however, the ‘past' art was rather good.
Side Story:
Ok, like the main story, this really had nothing to do with what's currently going on. Hopefully it's set up for something later on, but it's probably just something to throw into the comic and do some "character development." A classic human-form art style, not much different from most of ‘em, but has a bit of the artist's own style.
M:25YL
Okay, basically, just set-up. But I did detect a tiny hint of ‘suspense.' Don't remember where, though.
Sonic Comic #143
(From Here on I post the title of the story) "Original Freedom Fighters Part 2"
The sudden end of this side story. The betrayer was a rather corny move by the writers, especially considering which one they picked. As for the fate of the "Original Ffers," kinda stupid to throw away potential slave labor. Robotnik would have chosen on fate or the other, the way they wrote it, everything was just wasted.
M:25YL "Father's Day"
I'm not sure whether to call this ‘set-up' or ‘background.' The story itself did raise an interesting question, however. If you notice, Knuckles' eye isn't bionic. This can only mean that he hadn't "re-made" the world yet. A simple question is, why didn't he ‘fix' this along with everything else? A minor plot hole, but it's there. AS the ending says, it was probably just a way for the writer to remember his father.
Sonic Comic #144
M:25YL "The Die is Cast"
All right, great set up for this, now the final chapter to this ongoing saga. Great set up right until the ending. This story hit a weak climax, was all rising action, and had no resolution. I guess in a way it might be showing how Lara-Su went back in time earlier in the series. Other than that, the ending was a major let down.
"Love and Loss"
Ok, I guess this was some form os summation/resolution side story. Not the greatest way to do it, but hey, people like what people like. It at least resolved the Mina faction of this ‘Love quadrangle" problem. This didn't really show anything expect that lots of stuff has happened and people's outside appearances have changed.
Sonic Comic #145
"Shadows of Hope"
Wow, this looks to be interesting. Yet again we see the trend Archie has been using for the past several comics. Lots of exposition and rising action, very little climax, falling action, and resolution. Personally, I have no opinion or idea on what this story could possibly hold. It's looking good, let's wait and find out. As for the drawing, detailed, very much detailed. At times maybe he tried to detail the faces a little too much. Other than that it looked pretty good to me.
"Training Day"
Ok, this is a "Let's review what we all know" story.
"Harbinger"
All right! More setup! I don't understand why they brought back Tails' apparent "I'm as good as the next person" attitude. He was doing fine and they hadn't stopped him from going on missions since... the Tails Mini Series I believe. Things have changed though. Apparently, this is a continuation of "Shadows of Hope." Well, let's hope it gets moving and brings us some action packed thrills. As for the art in this one; it would've been great if it hadn't been "overdone." The characters weren't too highly detailed and were drawn in a good proportion. The only real problem was their apparent "size." I'm sorry, it just looks like they've gained a few pounds since the last comic. Slim Fast that and we're good.
Sonic Comic #146
"The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown" Part One: PROTOTYPE"
Wow! I am stunned. What a dynamic intro. Looks like Shadow's still running off that "Killer Instinct" they mentioned last comic. I don't' agree with the idea of Sonic being that badly injured while Shadow wasn't. If they're equal, and they fought for hours they'd either both be A OK or both pretty badly hurt. That is unless the writers had written it so Sonic was trying not to hurt Shadow. This comic seems to have it all, or at least most of it. Action, intrigue, and plot development.
"Out of your Shell"
OK, this story seems to be just some form of "placement" story. In other words, we have a new extra character, let's put him somewhere he wont' get in the way of our main story line. I guess it's ok. It just seemed like a waste of space to me. They could've continued the main storyline instead. As for the art, again with the heavy detailing. It works fine on Rotor and Tommy though
"Circuit Me"
All right, this one was just downright weird. I've seen lots of science fiction stories like this, but this outweirds all of them. This story had only one purpose: to "show" that Sally still loves Sonic. According to this story it's not Sally, it's her body. Kind of weird and demented but I don't' guess that's what they were trying to do, it just happened. Very weird episode. Raises lots of questions with no answers. What was the liquid? Isn't Nicole shielded? What's going on with the ring power source that Rotor was talking about? Too many questions, too little point to the story.
Sonic Comic #147
"The Good, the Bad, & the Unknown" Part Two: IGNITION
Really exciting, lots of action in this story. A 1 on 1 battle that quickly ignites into a 3v1 with Sonic on his own. Great set-up and months of waiting seem to start paying off (for both Sonic and Shadow fans as this is his story line). I will say that apparently some screw has either stripped out or rusted off in Shadow's brain. This is the second time Sonic has shown up and Shadow's first recourse is with his fists. With only two team members safe, this could shape up for quite a thrill ride. The details for the inside of the complex itself are rather good. I'm no expert but I know that it does take some time to draw all that junk.
"This Side of Parodies"
Well, this story is... "Off Panel." What can I say? It's plain slap-stick that's akin to what you'd find in an old "Cracked" or "Mad" magazine (although I must say it's definitely cleaner than some of that stuff).
"Fox and the Hound"
Just a simple side story. No real reason to have this except to just show Muttski again. Wow, Sonic's ear translator definitely works better than the Universal Translators off Star Trek. Anyways, a nice little side story to just have some fun amidst the chaos of the main storyline.
Sonic Comic #148
"The Good, the Bad, & the Unknown" Part Three: GENESIS
A quick overview for this would be, "long history lesson, bits of action in between." A few interesting things, like it seems there are more clues towards this Shadow either being more than a simple genetically engineered life form or not being the true Shadow at all. Mainly in this comic that would be Sonic's comment about Shadow being a brick wall. On a purely story minded point, explaining the chaos emeralds was a very bad idea. What's going to happen with the mystery now? One good thing about this history lesson is that they're trying to tie in everything since issue # 125. Aside from that, not really much to tell. It does look like it's continuing to climax. Here's hoping the resolution is as great as the action.
"HeroScape"
Ok, I don't know what this was for. "Special Advertising Section." Nothing to do with the Sonic comic but I figured I'd point it out since it is in here
"Playing Around"
A simple little storyline to add some form of humor to the series. Personally I think some wisecracks in the middle of action would fulfill that just fine, as that is what they used to do and it worked. The use of the old Batman series style of violence sound effects was slightly funny, if only for a cheap laugh. All in all, I guess it was okay. The ending was a little disturbing though.
"Destiny's Child"
All right! A Tails side story set up. Sure, it's just a mere story of his frustration and a recap the highlights in Tails' life since he met Athair, but it's still set up for something that could turn out to have a great plot and plenty of action! The artist seems to like lots of sharp angles and lines. Slightly different from the norm but a bit refreshing from the "Everything is curves" style of previous artists. All in all, this could be a good thing.
Sonic Comic #149
"The Good, the Bad, & the Unknown" Part Four: ARMAGEDDON
Well this was pretty action packed. I know I'm always talking about it, but, finally Archie has put more action into one. In fact, this one story was mainly action. Almost no set-up just straight action. True they didn't resolve much and just left questions but at least it had some excitement in it. Playful banter in the middle of flesh vs metal pounding action. That's what comic books are about. Anyway, we now have the 4th and final part to this series. Not much was accomplished but hopefully more will be revealed later on. One major problem I had was Rotor's MacGyver-like comment about Freedom Fighters never having used guns. Correction, Sally used one way back when she, Sonic, and Antoine stumbled onto an old combot. She used a really cool blaster/phaser handgun. That being said, I considered it a rather good comic.
"The Chosen One" Part one
Wow, finally something cool for a side story. A Tails-themed side story that involves inter-dimensional travel. Also, we finally get to see Zonic's dimension for once. Very quick set-up, that is if you discount all the issues since Tails' mini-series, and we're ready for some climaxing with resolution. The sidekick finally gets to take on the one bad-guy that's lasted longer and is more powerful than Robotnik himself. Story seems well plotted out and set up. It would've been almost perfect had they used a different art style too. It's good but Sonic's super long spines/fins are really annoying. Other than that this was great in my opinion.
Sonic Comic #150
"Hero to Zero in no time at all"
For a milestone issue (a really major one at that) this was not great at all. There are a few key things that really bug me about this one. First off, where'd the Shadowbot come from? How did it get there and why is no one worried about it. Secondly, what are land mines doing in the middle of Knothole? If Knothole is still a secret hidden location, the Shadowbot couldn't have found it and if it had more people would've been worried about it. I guess the ‘bot could've planted the mines but that's all I can come up with. As for the story itself, I can understand "Sonic" acting in the way he is, but the others going along with it? That makes no sense to me. The last thing that is bothering me isn't really that big an issue. If a massive energy discharge, set off by a time disruption beam hitting the last remaining super emerald that was strapped to Sonic's back while he was running at rates of almost of the speed of light if not past, is what gave Sonic green eyes and longer quills then how come the alternate version has the same? Even though the last time he was seen he still looked like the original version of Sonic. Other than that and the storyline, it was rather good. Really what would have been better was to use the closing chapter from the last storyline, but I guess it couldn't be helped.
"The Chosen One" Part two
Finally the closing chapter to a saga that has gone on since back before Dr. Robotnik was originally defeated (way back in the Tails mini-series). A story that comes with two, yes two, panels of titanic action. Ok yeah, I thought it was disappointing. With all the build-up they've had about Tails one would tend to think that this battle would have more grandiose stylized attacks than "Lord of the Rings: Third Age" or a Final Fantasy game. Still, now we know what he was chosen to do. For Tails' part, everyone is at peace. Still, this one's over. Looks like it's about time for a new sidestory.
Sonic Comic #151
"Chaos Emeralds are Forever"
So the continuation of where we left off. A nice short action scene to offset what Sonic’s evil double is up to followed by a nice short action scene afterwards in the fight between the two. They didn’t use this story the way I figured they would. Unfortunately they still have all of the same relationship problems that they did earlier and Antoine is still at status quo. Pretty much another set-up comic offset by some quick, slightly witty, action scenes.
"Stargazing"
The typical view of true life. Merely a comic to show the deeper meaning of war and how it causes people to grow up too quickly and miss out on the finer points of life. It directed the point quite well despite it being a strange, if innovative, way of presenting the idea.
Sonic Comic #152
"Sonic’s Angels"
An action packed epic. Really well written and full of action sequences. The idea of nanites (or nanobots) is a clever idea and can be played up into some great stories. Using logic is always interesting, especially when trying to outwit a computer. The only problem I can see is at the ending. Apparently due to the evil Sonic’s actions Sonic now has an added relationship with Bunnie. The only useful fact I can think of here is possibly getting Antoine back but anything is possible. Other than that the storyline was rather well written.
Sonic Comic #153
"Songoose Part 1 of 2"
Another well written story. Good set-up for a an action packed storyline. The two characters seen at the end are odd because Heavy and Bomb look different. These two look exactly like the Heavy & Bomb combo from Knuckles Chaotix. A strange twist if that’s who they really are. A quick action sequence with a blaster I’m sure I’ve seen in an episode of Startrek Voyager. Nothing really strange but it opens the door to possibly a very good story.
Sonic Comic #154
“Songoose Part 2"
Security details are always interesting. Mainly because something always
goes wrong (usually what you expect but sometimes they can be a surprise).
As it turns out, that is the Chaotix version of Heavy and Bomb. An
interesting twist really. They managed to follow through with their current
character relationship development and still have action in there. A
pleasant mix for most comers. A good way to wrap up a story. One
relationship mix-up down. Hopefully other problems will get solved from
here.
“More than Meets the Eye”
A classic question about true artificial intelligence and life. An
interesting story with an interesting twist. It amazes me, sometimes, how
the writers incorporate the ideas of other works (Star Wars, Star Trek,
Inspector Gadget). Really this is just a “feel good” story piece that has
us set up for something later. There’s really not much point to it as of
yet but how much is done with this remains to be seen.
Sonic Comic #155
“Line of Succession” Part 1
An interesting story. Part of the ongoing soap-opera feel that’s been
status quo recently but it seems like this trend is slowly winding down
(hopefully). It’s interesting to note that the last time Tails ever got
truly angry with Sonic was back in the early comics when he first met the
robot Fiona. I could be wrong but that’s the last instance I can recall.
It’s also odd that he would get ticked off since he was angry at everything
that had happened then. By now the idea that Sonic is way advanced in time
is no longer valid. Tails said he was 11 thus changing my viewpoint. I’ll
have to assume that General D’Coolette’s comment about Robotropolis was a
mistake. So this problem really doesn’t make any sense. The main point of
this story is pretty much a recurring theme it seems. Although why Sally’s
dad would repeat the same thing he said way back in the Brave New World
series of comics is beyond me. Ever since the staged performance waaaaaay
back in comic # 19 or 20 this question has been asked. Now it seems like
things are being set up to either fix some problems or finish off this
question. Sonic’s attitude seems to have changed though (what’s with the
70's mafia talk?). Hopefully, everything will end up for the better but one
never knows.
“The Price of Flame” Part 1
After a long time they’ve shown Dulcy again. This time it’s even in her own
side story. This first part is mainly set up and explanation. Whether or
not the writers originally planned this one or just noticed all the strange
coincidences it doesn’t matter. The basic idea of the story is intriguing
and could lead to some rather good things.
Sonic Comic #156
“Line of Succession” Part 2
Strange things are happening. For one thing we get a reminder of the
medieval roots of Mobian society. Or at least the medieval beliefs of the
Kingdom of Acorn. I mean Sally can’t be more than 17 (I seem to recall an
earlier comic saying she was 16. Add the one year time lag for Sonic’s
space escapades and viola) and this comic is about her wedding. This comic
is what old action hero stories are about. Heroes, deceitful villains, fast
paced action, nobles and the truth of commoners. It also managed to end a
conflict that had been addressed for a long while (mainly the comic’s
“Force” rip off commonly known as “The Source”) that being the Source’s
ideas about Sally which were conflicted anyway. It wraps up with an amazing
Antoine v Sonic fight sequence and leaves with a view of the current
Sonic/Fiona problem. Another complex relationship problem down, two more to
go.
“The Price of Flame” Part 2
Wow, been a while since the roboticizer has been used. Seems portable
versions are now available. Unfortunate, seeing as how the Shadowbots are
going to be using those more than likely. Battle plans must change now since
the FFers can no longer rely on having to be captured alive for
roboticization. As for Dulcy; it was mainly a dynamite comic. Plenty of
action, although some of it was just described, and the furthering of
characters. If nothing else that’s the first time I’ve heard a comic use
the word “cauterize.” This one does beg a major question, however. Why do
the dragon’s need the black nose ring if they can use fire (and apparently
use it well considering how well Dulcy did) without it?
Sonic Comic #157
“System Shutdown”
This comic has a nice buildup, although rather quiet where the main players
are concerned, towards the title page. A good action sequence is a great
way to start any story. Shifting from action to intrigue to sadness is
always interesting. On a side note here, it seems Sonic has many different
kinds of guitars. He used an acoustic earlier, then an electric in the
“Songoose” series and now something that almost looks like a mandolin. This
comic does explain the “minefield” problem when evil Sonic appeared. Turns
out Robotnik does know the location of knothole. A fairly good fight
between Sonic and Robo here, something lots of people like to see even
though it hasn’t happened recently (sadly enough). The only mistake I see
is that the writer’s have been slowing Sonic down recently. Antoine was
able to pin him with his sword (theoretically impossible considering Sonic’s
speed and agility). Robotnik was able to dodge Sonic’s attacks, things like
this (although he did take on a couple of tough customers with a sprained
ankle when Shadow first appeared). As for the story itself, this could get
interesting. A temporary alliance to save two important players as well as
solve a long lasting problem that even super-advanced aliens couldn’t
accomplish. The idea that Dr. Robotnik is smarter than Uncle Chuck, Rotor,
Tails, and the Aliens seems to boggle the mind. I guess that while he may
not be smarter it may just be he knows something extra.
Finally, although it’s not a complete story, we have another single story
comic. This looks to be a major action story as all the proper players are
in it.
Sonic Comic #158
"System Reconfiguration"
The answer to the unleashed super-weapon's purpose is revealed.
A rather interesting idea for a challenging tale. An interesting plan,
unfortunately the writers do not explain what has gone wrong.
Even amidst the action this is merely the exposition for the story
in the next comic. A young one injured and only two with the ability
to fight this horde. Either the writers have placed themselves in
a corner or Sonic is in for the biggest fight in a while.
"Insider Treading"
This really needs no explanation. Another off-panel comic strip.
Simply put its purpose is to show what happens "behind the scenes" in a comic form.
Sonic Comic #159
"System Reboot"
Starting off with action, apparently speed is key in resolving the conflict.
The question I have is, how did Shadow use Chaos Control without an emerald?
Sonic once did it with a fake emerald but that surprised Shadow as well.
Shadow seems to have gathered a plethora of abilities recently. The only
explanation I have is the game "Shadow the Hedgehog." He has powers now
because he has them in the game. As for the enemy in this comic, they've
now fully explained where they are from but still no reasoning for why
things went wrong. A quick look at battle strategy either proves the Mobians
to be the biggest hypocrites in the Nature vs Tech battle, or the dumbest race
on the planet. They have amazing technology, the ability to use lasers and
such. What weapon do they decide to protect castle Acorn with? They use bows
and arrows. Earlier in the series it was mentioned that due to a problem in
the past with an Overlander shooting a Mobian, they don't' use guns.
However, Sally used one in a fight against Combot. Off and on, blasters
have been used before. Another example was when Antoine went in search
of the answer to a map his father had left behind, the other freedom
fighters used bot blasters (i.e. guns) against robots again. So why are
they using bows and arrows against this mechanical horde? Fortunately,
Sonic is strong enough to fight them off himself, Shadow's way was just
quicker. A confusing deus ex machina ending which opens many questions
but still quicker.
"Insidious"
Merely more exposition involving the nanites. Strange that so many
comics prior it was the Freedom Fighters who used devices to spy upon
Robotnik and now the situation is reversed. Like I said, merely exposition.
The answer to this problem will have to wait.
Sonic Comic #160
"BIRTHDAY BASH! Part One: Giving and Receiving"
Another age increase for the time defying hedgehog. Speaking of time
defying, players from way back seem to be reappearing all over the place.
A debut into the comic by Bark and Bean plus Tails' old arch enemies.
The set up for this comic makes it more rigged to be a problem solver than
anything else. From a certain viewpoint, this comic can make or break Sonic's
friendship with Tails. While that's something I'd believed was already
unbreakable, due to what the comic itself had said, the writers might be
thinking otherwise now. In addition, there seems to be an "Ashura Rip-Off"
as well. Archie seems to enjoy bringing back old characters as well as
introducing new ones. The mysterious green hedgehog from Sonic 2 might
just be who this new villain is modeled after. If nothing else, the next
issue should have some interesting sequences as well. Speaking of which,
the thieving duo of Rouge and Evil Sonic seem to be keeping Locke busy.
Strange that a rarely seen character from way back is now a key character in Knux's job.
"Sonic Rush"
First Question for this story arc, how did Blaze reach Sonic's dimension?
I think this story actually takes place after the events of Sonic Rush.
I could be wrong but that's what it appears to be set up for. If so then
it re-demonstrates the Writer's ability to rehash old problems and character
traits. There's not much more to say, aside from a quick stint of action and
some brief exposition, this story appears to be more of a white knuckler to
what will happen later. Much like the previous story arc about the nanites.
Sonic Comic #161
"BIRTHDAY BASH! Part TWo: Birthday Boys"
Not the greatest of stories but not the worst, like so many others. First off,
Rouge just walks off and leaves the Master Emerald without saying a thing.
I mean, it's sitting right there at the beginning of the comic. All she has
to do is take it and she lets "Scourge" take her away. Secondly, while the quick
end to a silly ‘bot was cool I am rather disappointed that there wasn't any
"Tails taking on his old Nemesis" scenes in this one. The set-up was rather perfect
for a Tails battle and they just skipped it. He gets one good, albeit important,
hit in against the main badguy but it's still rather disappointing. This storyline
seemed to be done rather hurriedly. Moving from action and ending with set-up for
what will come next. Other than that this had some nice full melee action.
Whenever three hedgehogs end up in a battle one can be assured of an interesting
outcome. This one ends with nothing resolved except security.
"Sonic Rush"
One word for this one: Rushed. I don't mean like the kind in the game either.
The only thing this story seems to have to do with the game is that there is a
cat named Blaze. If this story takes place after the game then both parties
would have recognized each other. If it takes place before then both parties
would recognize each other at the beginning of the game. In other words, this
appears to be a simple cameo to show o someone's skills at drawing blaze and
Sonic in a battle scene. The story ends with one major question stinging in
my mind: "What in the world was this for?" Unless they use this for a really
well written story later on it is merely a waste of pages that could've been
used to make the main story better. Here's hoping they keep it from being a waste.
Sonic Comic #162
"THE DARKEST STORM" Part One: The Gathering Tempest
This is some of the best exposition I've seen in a while. For one thing, Sonic
appears to have learned his lesson from when he was appointed to the council
when Robotropolis was retaken. Sometimes it is better to be a free agent and
let others bear the titles. In addition, The return of Merlin Prower and Sir
Connery (way back in Knux's quest to retrieve the sword of Acorns Remember?
Try StH # 45) comes in addition to several key players from a ways back. A new
enemy mixed with some old ones and possibly the fate of all those who have been
captured by Eggman so far. The writers are really writing stuff to change the
way things have been going so far. Returning some of the most well known sub-bosses
is a good move (much better than introducing brand new characters who do the same
thing). With an amazing twist that I never even thought would happen. Things
are changing drastically and may lead to the downfall of anyone.
"TIES THAT BIND"
An interesting side story. One of the few written about Snively. He's proven
who and what he is once again. Yet there is a glimmer of "hope" that he's
not fully like he used to be. With this story, things have moved a bit more
towards the way they were before all the massive upsets occurred. As an added
note, they returned some of their "old-style" humor in these two stories.
Snively starts out working on an old "Genesis" system and Tails has a Genesis
controller on his workbench. Classic drawings from an earlier time.
Sonic Comic #163
"THE DARKEST STORM" Part Twp: Onset of the Squall
A perfect medium for the second part in a trilogy. Action and
intrigue blended very well with exposition and set up. All the
major players have made their appearance as far as past enemies
can be accounted for. The ball is in the hero's court. Really
there isn't much to say without revealing the whole storyline.
The mysterious "Anonymous" is still.. well... mysterious.
This story seems to be one of the few series left where
Robotnik is a supreme evil still. Now the world is filled
with the toughest evils ever faced. Questions arise from
this comic. Such things as, will Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles
enter their respective super forms to destroy the enemies
completely? Who is "Anonymous?" Could he be A.D.A.M.? Or
perhaps he's the elusive Dr. Finitivus. I'll be waiting
until next month along with the rest of you.
Sonic Comic #164
"THE DARKEST STORM" Part Twp: DOWNBURST
Finally, the conclusion to a three part saga of megalithic proportions. This
was one fo the best Sonic comics I have read in quite some time. I haven't
seen so much action since Sonic Comic #125! This short trilogy has changed
a lot and revamped a few things here and there. They loss of the Ancient Walkers
and the Source of All is astonishing in the mere fact that they've been around
for some time. There was an almost "Aragorn vs Sauron in the Palantir (And no
I'm talking about the book version fo LotR not the movie.. That messed that
scene up)" battle with the crown of Acorns. Had King Max been at the battle
the source might have been saved. The battle between Mogul and Sir Connery was
much better than the one between Mega-Ultra-Hulk-Tails and Mammoth. An almost
"Merry vs The Dark Lord of the Nazgul" heroism (yes, I saw a lot of parallels in
this one). In short, an amazing comic of heroism, betrayal, sorrow, and
bittersweet-victory. Bring on the Determined Heroes next time!
Sonic Riders Part 2 of 2
Wow... this was so rushed they even left out the title portion. Ok, so this one
wasn't as bad as the first part but that's only because it's based on the first
part and not the original game. The usage of the Sonic Riders art style was cool
to see in a comic. In fact it's one style I wouldn't mind seeing again on occasion.
Some slight humor in the banter and the fast paced racing (however invisible) was
cool to see/read. The ending was kind of a cheap copout but it almost reminds me of
the original Sonic comic style of writing ("Hey Kids! Press the buttons on that SEGA
controller to grab all the rings" that stuff which was in the first several comics).
Sonic Comic #165
"LEAK"
So, a new comic. Some action scenes that end with making a deal with villains
(never a good thing by the way). I wish Archie would lighten up on the "Sonic-
relationship" stuff. It mainly seems to mess things up or make problems. That
aside, they need to hurry up and resolve the issues now centered around Fiona.
Seeing as how they mentioned what's happened to Robotnik's "Egg Vineyard" I doubt
we'll be seeing Constable Remington again sadly. But Archie does pull crazy stunts
sometimes. The last scene with Julie-Su and Rouge doesn't really add anything to
the storyline, it just makes a certain set of fans happier.
"Call of Duty"
A pretty cool comic showing one of Knuckles' inner strengths. A bit of a difference
from when he buckled under when Sally came to ask the Brotherhood for aid. I don't
think the course the conversation took synched up with Locke's character from previous
issues. Yes, Knuckles' comments would've stung and/or struck a sharp chord, but no he
would not have threatened anyone or anything and would have stood behind Knuckles.
That's just what Locke was (really he and Knux were very much alike, which is what
makes this so confusing). Well maybe things will even out and people will come to grips
with the idea of saving the planet. Who can tell?
Sonic Comic #166
Mobius 25 Years Later - Part One: Tempus Fugit
Back to right after they left off, or are they really? An interesting turn
of events from what happened last time the writers used this storyline. On
a side note, Guardian training seems to be very close to using the "Force."
That aside, things seem to have gone downhill for th main characters. Quite
possibly it's even worse for Knuckles. That's the one thing I can't understand
in this comic without further information. If Knux remembers what happened,
like the others, then why is he still working for Shadow? Or is this the
time-line that links up with Lara-Su's previous deviation into the past?
While explanations as to what happened between Sonic and everyone else are
scarce some things don't need to be explained, just resolved. They're idea
on how to resolve things seems to be slightly off. Almost "80's platformer
video game" style of thinking. Things are geared back up for action now.
Old allies and friends fighting together and against each other for their own
reasons. How can life return to "normal" after this? Maybe it will and maybe
it won't; we'll see in the coming months.
"The Chaotix Connection"
The return of the rat, a very interesting storyline line follow-up. Sadly I
don't think this one was as well contrived. The storyline is reminiscent of
certain Saturday morning cartoons I used to watch. Essentially a short, less
intense version of the previous set-up that lacked in certain things that made
first story worth re-reading. But it's nice to at least have another Chaotix
story to put up on the shelf.
Sonic Comic #167
Mobius 25 Years Later - Part Two: Tempus Aeternus
Well this story was a let down. After all the dramatic build-up it sure collapsed
really quickly. First off, I don't care if he's 25 years older (which would make
him 40-41). If Chuck Norris and that other guy can be as strong as they were over
the age of 55 then there should be no prob with Sonic (plus that whole "One of the
only people who can use the emeralds" thing). Add to it, the final battle was
relatively simple. Almost as if there was no challenge (especially considering a
trainee won with only a slight injury). For anyone who's played video games: How
often does using one's own form (or element) of attacks work on said person? The
answer is "very rarely." I must say that, sadly, this was a very poorly thought
out ending and fight scene. You may say "but he was living on the street all that
time." That really doesn't matter because, as we've seen, whenever the main chars
are oppressed they get better and stronger. So Sonic would have stayed strong. The
story ended happily, and solved my problems with what Knuckles was doing, but what
should have taken longer (the way they write) took only a few panels.
"Hedgehog Day"
Ok, I haven't even seen this movie (i.e. "Groundhog Day") but having seen the story
idea a couple hundred times made it obvious. Even so, it was enjoyable to read and
the last page made it worth my while. At least, when compared to the resolution of
the main story. Interesting point here. Note that on the last "day" his shoes are
laying beside his bed. Yet when he leaps out they are on his feet before he hits the
ground.
(Side Note: The best rendition of this story idea was in the late 90's series "Early
Edition." At least... that's the best version I can think of).
Sonic Comic #168
"Order From Chaos" Part One: The Gathering
There isn't a lot I can say about this storyline. It's mainly flashbacks to the last
story arc and an ad every other page. Suffice to say it's a continuation of the same
cool storyline. It seems to be coming to a close however. Story items set up in the
last few storylines have begun to play out and it's only a matter of time until they
have to return to the standard story-set or create a whole new group of things. It's
hard to say much without revealing key points in the story, but suffice to say that the
result to this was obvious although the plan of Anonymous wasn't.
"Courage and Honor"
Well this story was a curve I didn't consider. The story was well put together and relatively
well thought out. That doesn't change the fact that story arcs like this can hurt when read
or re-read. Antoine has progressed a lot since the early comics (as have most of the characters)
but I guess this is full redefining comic for him. He's no longer anything like the Antoine in
SatAm (except for his french accent).

"Order from Chaos" Part Two: The Great Harmony
Wow, either the writers have been setting up for this story arc for a while, or they found
a whole bunch of left-open plot devices and strung them together. Once again they write
themselves into a corner though and that calls for either a Deus Ex Machina or the ending
they used. Two consecutive comics with this is sad, however. We do get to see slightly
more of what Tails' purpose is. Amazing that after so many years and months since his
"chosen" status was revealed we're actually finding out what things he was meant to do.
"...For a Friend"
Finally, a one line through adventure story arc involving Espio. It's really about time.
Despite just him being awsm this arc paints Robotnik as actually truly evil. We find that
Nicole has also ceased to be a small line based face on her screen and retains the appearance
she gained in the recent story arc. The story itself is short and to the point. It's mainly
to establish that fighting is still going on at Angel Island and point that Robotnik is still
the real supreme evil. The extra things in the story make it an enjoyable read as well.
(Btw, there is no black 5. In fact, both the five and the six he refers to are Hearts).

"Comings and Goings"
I'm going to call this story the "surgeon" because it feels like they remedied 2 chronic problems
and created a whole new one. Resolution for Tails, another resolution for Sally's father
(someone must've cursed him when he was born or something. King Acorn has the worst life
I've ever seen). Sad thing is these problems were fixed in just a few panels with a chaos
emerald. How many times have they had an emerald and not fixed this problem already? Next story
problem is Feist. Most insanely feared creature in the entire series. He's only been seen in
flashbacks and everyone is scared of him. We still don't' know 100% of what happened when King
Acorn met him. He's surrounded by mystery and danger. So in this comic do we learn anything?
Actually, no, he merely flaunts his power and shows how he's changed the entire universe so there
are only 7 chaos emeralds once again. Really that part of the story was poorly set-up and this
resolution seemed rather rushed.
"The Island of Misfit Badniks"
This story can be summed up in one word: "Flashback." It's not a real flashback but it's a story that
mimics the style of the first 20-25 comics. Once he gets to the island the art is simplified and the
story is very direct with the only plot twist being sudden. Very simple btu vintage original era style.

"I AM"
Wow, another resolution episode. I guess Archie was building up to Shadow's past, some of the build-up
was actually interesting, but they canned that once Shadow the Hedgehog came out and moved towards this.
So in one short story they cleared up most of his past and matched him as close as possible to the games.
Aside from this, the story has a few key mistakes. For one, Shadow would've just dropped the hair and left.
Secondly, Sonic wouldn't have made a no-brain comment about Fiona like that. I tend to be socially-inept
and I wouldn't make a dead-brain move like that. Third, even with both his hands holding something Shadow
would be able to take down those simple robots without any problem. A lot of mis-writing in this one.
Plus they suddenly shifted Shadow's character in the comic to "match" (which failed) more closely to the
games. Shadow wouldn't get weak depressed and weepy like he does in this comic, he'd either get more
somber or angry. Bad writing most of the way around.
"Enforcers"
Amazing how Echidnaopolis has fallen. At least this comic built some intrigue, which Echidna storylines seem
to enjoy doing. Sadly, they mis-wrote Locke slightly. As a guardian he wouldn't leave his post to go searching.
He would either rely on the other Guardians' skills (seriously, Spectre can shoot emerald energy out of his hand..
That means no weapons needed) to bring them back or would have requested Knuckles aid at least once. But then
again, even Obi-wan Kenobi made mistakes.

"Truth of the Heart"
A shocker story-line was the goal of this arc I believe. I think it played out as well as it could have. They
stayed mostly true to the outline for characters that Archie has laid out (I still say Tails wouldn't be so stuck
on Fiona, but oh well). Speaking of Fiona, we knew she held grudges and was rather bitter but for her to turn
this quickly? That was interesting. So many negative things happening in tandem to the main characters it's like
a never ending story of sorrow laced with bits of happiness. The fight scene in and of itself isn't bad.
Strengths matched between characters and Sonic even manages to grab a good line in the midst of the battle
(a decently strong one at that). In the end, the characters seem to be hitting a trend towards staying the
course no matter what happens.
"Worth the Effort"
Simplistic yet classic Amy storyline. While the focus is on Amy the goal revolves around Sonic. It does show
that everyone works for their skills instead of it being natural talent and strength. In other words, a side
story that shows some quick regular life without the drama.

"Round Up"
As Antoine said in the last issue, yes the villain count has increased by a lot (although really no more than is
normal, they just don't drop them as quickly as they had been). All in all though, the Antoine character has
been radically changed many times since the beginning. They seem to have settled on the "cowardly yet courageous
at need" coyote (so he's now a character favored by my brother). Back to the storyline, however; Archie seems to
enjoy opening up story ideas and then rapid fire closing and/or condensing it to be reopened after the plot has
ripened. So in this issue we get a nod to Sonic riders, a cool sword slice and the canning of several badguys
at once (rather sad considering how powerful some of these guys were at one time). The added factor of Rouge's
sudden change of style/technique is interesting as well. Now just to see where all this goes as either they are
trying to wrap everything up or set the stage for something amazing (hence the sudden use of the Egg fleet).
"See Ya' Later Chao!" Part One
Sonic X anyone? A quick overview of what chao are (for those who still haven't played Sonic Adventure or any of
the recent Sonic games, which I highly doubt...) and become. Throw in some slight jokes and a cut-off ending for
a second part and you have a the basic plot.
Sonic Comic #174
"Union"
It has been a while since I've read a comic like this one (the last one was titled "Union" and was a Star Wars comic
by Michael Stackpole). Half adventure and half "Life" this one actually does something not done before by a Sonic
comic (some may say "remember Elias," however, recall that we only saw that fact a few months later). I must say
that Espio is rather cool, but they made a very grave error. First off, even in a panic he probably would have
concealed himself. Secondly, while running he would've hidden and then run a maze pattern, thus losing pursuit.
If he'd done that, however, the story would be different. There's only two real options for what happened to him
and we'll discover those next time. As for the others, the storyline is bright and happy with possible leanings
towards repairing past damages. One has to wonder about what Tails' dad was mumbling about.
"See Ya' Later Chao!" Part Two
Amazing, you can nearly hear the horrible Sonic X voice acting in this one. Oh well, a simple solution to a rather
strange problem. For one thing, even Eggman knows you don't "Drill for magic energy." Such energy is stored in
living things and items such as emeralds, power stones, gem stones, and rings. Obviously he must've planned ahead
for "wanton destruction" as he said. Since really there is no other reason to bring a massive drill like that.
Sonic Comic #175
25 issues milestone once again. One story for this comic, no side-stories to interrupt, thank you writers!
"Eggman Empire"
Happiness, that beautiful joy that appears at the beginning and ending of most stories. So far the Sonic
comics have enjoyed a strange sinusoid of this feeling with minor shifts adjusted for only a few characters
here and there. This is where everything has been leading towards. The balance of power being shifted fully
into Eggman's hands by the removal of most villains. We now know the fate of Espio (a fate worse than
Roboticization). Just when things are hitting their most peaceful true evil arrives once more. Much like
the "New Jedi Order" of books, what has been built over a course of years has now been returned to what it
was before. We're looking at what could be a massive Hero Epic that would remain true to the complete meaning
of that description. Or it could be a truely heroic tale of adventure done much like adventure anime/manga such
as Rurouni Kenshin. Either way, Eggman has shown his strength and play his hand. Sonic and company will now
be pushed to their limits, both in mind and body. It's amazing that even at this desperate hour Sonic's theme
holds true. Despite a terrible strength and overwhelming odds he won't be stopped and will try to the bitter
end. Once again we're set for action and adventure, drama and mystery. This arc could be ranked with the
Mecha Madness or End Game saga. Eggman's first psychological gambit seems to have failed but how long can
the heroes last?
Added note: Things seem to be reverting back to the way they were. Sonic is once again alone with only a
few friends, as is Knuckles. He faces impossible odds with only a few places left to rest his feet. He must
once again become the elite soldier, the sword of justice that brings triumph for good and protects the weak.
This is the storyline that could be. We will see, in just one or perhaps many months.
