HomeSonic is back, and this time he's got a new friend with him! Meet Miles "Tails" Prower (Tails for short), a cute little fox with two tails! Gamers who have played the original game will find that this game has many of the same elements. To all you Sonic fans, this game is great!
Story- 7/10
This game basically has the same story as the
original. Robotnik has
made the little animals into robots, and your job as
Sonic and Tails
is to free them and put the evil doctor back in is
place. You would
think that after trying this already and failing,
Robotnik would try
something a little different. After all?isn't he
supposed to be a
genius? *sigh* Well, at least having a redundant
plot is better than
having no plot at all.
Graphics- 9/10
The graphics in this game have slightly improved
from the first game.
The vibrant colors and backgrounds make you wish
you were right
there with Sonic and Tails. After playing SA2:B on
your Gamecube,
the graphics will probably look prehistoric?but back
in '92 the
graphics were awesome.
Sound- 9/10
The *chings* and *gloops* are back! If you hated
them from the first
game, you'll hate them in this game too! I never
found them to be
that distracting. The music is just as catchy as it
was in the
original. I especially love the music from Mystic
Cave Zone. Very
good stuff indeed?
Gameplay - 9/10
I was tempted to give this section a 10, but
decided against it
because the gameplay isn't perfect. There are
occasional slowdowns
and a few glitches that I've noticed. But other than
that, the game
is really fun! SonicTeam has added the
"spin-dash", a useful move
that is used to get up slopes. There are even more
zones to explore
this time around, although each zone has been
confined to having
only two acts instead of three. You start off in the
typical green
setting and then progress to a chemical plant, an
underwater ruins
zone, a casino, etc. And then you finally have your
last battle with
Dr. Robotnik. This battle is much more challenging
than the last
battle in the first game. And remember those
chaos emeralds? They're
back too! This time, the special stages are much
tougher and require
more skill. You start off running in a cylindrical path.
You will be
told how many rings are needed to pass, and then
it is up to you to
collect them! Watch out for bombs, which cost you
rings. Each time
you beat a special stage, you are rewarded a
chaos emerald. With all
of the emeralds, you can transform into :::drum
roll::: Super Sonic!
Super Sonic is invincible, making him immune to
any form of danger
(except for shortage of air or falling into the bottom
of the screen).
For every second that you are Super Sonic, one
ring will be taken
from you ring supply, so stock up on rings before
you transform (a
minimum of 50 rings are required!). My favorite
addition to this game
was the 2P mode. There are four zones to choose
from, but you must
complete all of them to get your final ranking. The
gameplay overall
is excellent!
Replay Value- 9/10
I've played this game many times before, but it
never seems to get
old! Each time you play you can take a different
route and face new
enemies and obstacles! Beating the game (which
includes getting all
of the Emeralds) can be tough for even the expert
gamer, while the
amateur gamer will still have fun simply playing the
game.
Listed below are the pros and cons to the game-
Pros:
+ fun, challenging gameplay
+ beautiful graphics
+ catchy soundtrack
+ loads of replay value
+ a new character!
+ 2P mode
Cons:
+ slowdown and occasional glitches
+ same storyline
Final Note-
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a well deigned, fun for all
ages kind of
game. I recommend it to anyone who liked Sonic
the Hedgehog. It is a
MUST for all Sonic fans! Even if you didn't like the
original, you
can probably spare this game $5 and pick it up at
FuncoLand, or any
other store that sells used video games. This game
provided me with
hours upon hours of fun! I hope you'll take my
advice and buy this
game for yourself. You won't have any regrets!
Final Score- 9/10
