Intro
After the success of the first two Sonic games,
Sonic Team decided to
bring back their spiky creation in a whole new
awesome game! Sonic is
back and better than ever! Without a doubt, this is
THE best Sonic
game yet.
Story- 8/10
This game uses the same 'ole storyline, with a little
twist. It's
nothing brilliant, but an improvement nevertheless.
You still have
to battle the evil Dr. Robotnik, but this time he's
brought an
accomplice. Meet Knuckles the Echidna. Now
Knuckles isn't really a
villain. He's actually been tricked by Eggman
(Robotnik) into
thinking that Sonic and co. are trying to steal the
Master Emerald.
"But why has Eggman chosen to partner up with a
red echidna," you
may ask. The answer to this question lies in
Knuckles past. You see?
he was the last survivor of his echidna tribe on the
Floating Island
(aka Angel Island). He therefore took is upon
himself to guard the
Master Emerald from anyone who tried to disturb
its peace. The Master
Emerald is the biggest, baddest Emerald of 'em all!
Without this
Emerald, Floating Island would sink into eternal
doom. Greedy Robotnik
wants the power for himself, and to be able to
harness its power he
must first get past Knuckles. Thus, he swindled
gullible Knuckles.
Will Sonic be able to save him?
Graphics- 9/10
Yet again the graphic are rich in color. Nothing you
wouldn't accept
from Sonic Team ^_^ Let's move on?
Sound- 9/10
Yep yep, this game uses the same crisp sound
effects taken straight
from the previous two games. It never does get old.
If you like
upbeat and catchy music, then you'll certainly enjoy
listening to
this game's harmonious soundtrack. I personally
do! The different
music just seems to fit each level so well. Carnival
Night's music
will have you feeling as if you're actually in the
middle of a
celebration. If you really enjoy the music as much
as I do, I would
recommend you check out www.vgmusic.com after
you've enjoyed your
stay here at TSW. They have truckloads full of
MIDIs from this game
and the other Sonic games.
Gameplay - 9/10
After you get past the graphics and beautiful
sound, the gameplay is
what the game really boils down to! This game has
many, many levels
for you to explore! You start off in the usual green
stage, dive into
an underwater level, head on over to a carnival, etc.
I won't spoil
all the levels for you ;) They seem to be longer and
full of more
paths in this game when compared to the previous
two. Don't plan on
finishing this game within an hour like you may with
the other two.
I found this game to provide you with a much more
challenging time.
There are even more Emeralds to for you to collect
this time around.
I preferred Sonic 2's special stages to the ones in
this game, but
they are still pretty cool. You are placed on a huge
sphere and your
mission is to collect all of the blue orbs lying
around. I never quite
understood why, but I bet it sounds easy, huh?
Well, you'd better
watch out for the red orbs! If you touch even one of
those its game
over for you! And don't dawdle around either >.<
With every second,
your pace gets faster. One wrong move and you're
out!!
Sonic Team has decided to add a new "bonus
level". Each time you hit
a checkpoint and you have a certain amount of
rings, you have the
option to be warped into a giant gum dispenser.
Well, at least that's
what it looks like to me. While in there you have to
chance to
collect different shields, rings, and other goodies!
But don't fall
out!
Now there's only one thing I really didn't like about
his game, and
that was the 2P mode. I really wish they would have
kept things like
they had in Sonic 2 with the FULL levels. Instead,
they decided to
"loop" the level, making them a bit monotonous :(
But the rest of
the game is too good to let this small flaw get in the
way! Yay!
Replay Value- 9/10
If you love the thrill of bouncing on springs,
collecting rings, and
beating up Robotnik over and over again, you'll
spend hours replaying
Sonic 3 ^_^ I can assure you that it won't begin to
collect dust
until for awhile. Knowing Sonic Team and their
hallmark of innovation,
I just had to hope for a little more. Maybe you made
your way 'till
the last level, but you had to eat dinner. What do
you do? Keep the
game on pause for a whole half hour? Or do you
turn it off and lose
EVERYTHING? I got my wish! Included is an
option to save your games!
And you have multiple files to save your games in.
And it's all
included in the game itself. No VMU or memory
card required! Ahh,
the good 'ole days of gaming?
Listed below are the pros and cons to the
game-
Pros:
+ fun, EXTRA challenging gameplay
+ beautiful graphics
+ awesome soundtrack
+ loads of replay value
+ Knuckles!
Cons:
+ slowdown and occasional glitches
+ average story line
+ messed 2P mode
Final Note-
This is definite "yes" for any Sonic fan! And once
you hook this
game up with Sonic and Knuckles, you have the
best Sonic title for
any system! w00t! Like the other two games, this
game can easily be
found at FuncoLand. Once you play Sonic 3, you'll
feel bad for the
small price you paid for it.
Final Score- 9/10
