Background
The year was 1990. Sega needed a mascot to match up with Nintendo's Mario; somebody like Mickey Mouse was to Disney. But, that wasn't all - they needed one that could do really well in the United States, where their sales were lacking. So, they had several character designs whipped up for such a mascot. There were bulldogs, rabbits, foxes, and even a guy that looked like Teddy Roosevelt in underwear. However, none of them made the cut (well, the Teddy Roosevelt guy could very well be the villain), as Naoto Oshima pulled out, from the deep, dark realms of his imagination, the one that, with more character designs by himself and a well-made engine by Yuji Naka, pushed Sega to the top in 1991: Sonic the Hedgehog.

Storyline
The planet is our own. The time is the future. The stars are two old enemies, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik and Sonic the Hedgehog. They've been feuding since God-knows-when over whether Eggman gets to rule Earth or not, and will probably continue to do so to for as long as they both live. Eggman, a little miffed that his plans fail over and over again to the same blue animal, feels a hostage situation is necessary, so he takes all the animal friends of our hero captive, and holds them on Sonic's very home of South Island.

However, the location has a reason: The island, which drifts endlessly, making it impossible to map, often brings forth portals to an alternate dimension - the "Special Zone", as it's called - where 6 of a total of 7 priceless, magical artifacts are located - the Chaos Emeralds. Eggman's plan, cunning as usual, is that his special fortress, Scrap Brain, which has a similar shape to South Island, will pull some of the portals his way, so he can nab the gems for his future rotten plans.

Sonic, finding that the island has been taken over by Eggman's robots, and soon learning of Eggman's plan to get the Chaos Emeralds , knows his place in this adventure - the hero. And from there, it's all game.
