Sonic the Hedgehog was the second Sonic TV show to come out - the first was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. This show was a huge leap for Sonic and Sonic fans alike, as it was the first time Sonic had ever been seen away from the gently rolling hills and colorful backgrounds of the Sega universe. (Unless you count AoStH, which was somewhere inbetween....) It debuted in 1993 on ABC, and was an overnight hit for Sonic and non Sonic fans alike.
Sonic the Hedgehog introduced things that AOSTH just didn't have. It had action, and adventure yes, but it also had drama, actual mature themes, and something we people like to call a PLOT! Not all fans loved it, however. It strayed very far from the games, basically having nothing of them in it, except for the Pilot episode, where Sonic and Tails infiltrated Dr. Robotnik's compound. However, it ended on a cliffhanger when Power Rangers eclipsed it in popularity, and the 3rd Season, where Tails was going to become an actual freedom fighter, and many more things would be happening, was never aired.
I know, I know. We all hate those low budget, high kicking teens in tights, the Power Rangers, for what they did to SatAM. But never fear! SatAM was too big of a hit to just fade off into the distance. Archie Comics: Sonic the Hedehog was released in 1993. This series perfectly, flawlessly, down to the smallest minutia followed the SatAM universe. To this day the comics still are running and are currently at 139 (As of July 2004). And so, SatAM lives on!
