During the console wars, SEGA's Genesis defeated both the NES an SNES in sales. If nowhere else, than at least in the US. This was not just due to it's technology but also due to its games. SEGA had an affinity, like most game designers of the time, to create interesting games which had never been seen before. To hear them described it sometimes sounds like the games were developed under dubious circumstances. Examples:
Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster: A possum who is the leader of a band known as the "Rocket Knights" fights evil pigs bent on galactic domination through revival of ancient evil technology. He wields a magic sword and fights using his abilities as well as the rocket pack suited with his armor.
Ecco: Dolphins, aquatic puzzles, Aliens, and Time Travel. This game has the most interesting set of components. Who would ever have though of using a dolphin to fight aliens in time?
Sonic the Hedgehog: A blue rodent moving at super fast speeds collecting rings and strange stones to defeat a fat megalomaniacal scientist. The very concept of this is rather comical and almost silly if someone mentions it like this.
